It sounds like a tautology, as we usually associate our home to our world and vice versa. The phrase “this is my world” is often used as a reference to the four walls that define our home, our country or on a larger scale, a continent. Yet, it also has a contradictory connotation, as this world is actually a habitat to a wide variety of living beings and umbrella to our many small homes.

Identification

The need to confine our own living space harbours sentiments like pride, patriotism and belonging. Thus, a need for identification. This concept of identification is defined by languages or traditions of a place, where we were born, grew up or for some reason, feel particularly, physically and/or sentimentally affiliated to. The feeling of belonging to or owning a world is on the other side of the coin, accompanied by a habit of protection, which expresses itself in different ways; e.g., the tendency of xenophobia, which comes from the Greek “xenos”- foreigner and “phobos”-fear, arises as a protective measure to secure our base. This could lead to contempt to all that is strange and that might intrude our space. So is the case with racism, when the common denominator is colour of the skin, eye or hair, bringing about reproaches to otherness and “métissage”. The yearn to create small worlds for ourselves, to feel at ‘home’, does not only meet with our social needs but also resonates to seclusion and segregation.

Relationship

Our relationship to the world can be likened to a subject-object relationship, in which the subject perpetually consumes the object. While being the subjects and acting as “masters” of the world, we put less value on respect towards other living beings, who share the same environment as we do. This can be illustrated by the following examples: the building of dams to provide us with energy, but also leads to the displacement and vitiation of nature; the deforestation to supply us with wood is still a disaster to natural habitats of millions of other living beings; the ecosystem is still afflicted by oil spills for our energy needs; the numerous scientific trials on animals for our cosmetics and medicines; And how are we yet to cope with our weaponry of mass destruction?

If this world is our home, how can we walk in it without considering the scars we leave behind? If this world is our home, how can we be so nonchalant to other co-inhabitants of this home?

Exhibition

This group exhibition invites artists of diverse nationalities to pose questions, without an immediate urge for answers. It beckons artists to express themselves on issues such as togetherness, identification, phobia, nature or in short our psycho-social conditions. An appropriate line from a gospel hymn says: “this world is not my home, I am just passing through”.

This world is not my home

“Diese Welt ist nicht mein Zuhause“ – der Titel klingt wie eine Tautologie, da wir gewöhnlich unsere Heimat mit der Welt, in der wir leben, verbinden und umgekehrt. Die Redewendung „Das ist meine Welt“ wird oft gebraucht, wenn wir uns auf die vier Wände, in denen wir wohnen, beziehen, aber auch auf unser Land oder – in einem noch größeren Maßstab – auf unseren Kontinent. Aber sie hat auch eine widersprüchliche Konnotation, denn diese Welt ist tatsächlich auch Lebensraum für eine Vielzahl von Lebewesen und Schutzschirm von unseren vielen kleinen Zuhause.

Identifikation

Das Bedürfnis, unseren Lebensraum einzugrenzen, birgt Gefühle wie Stolz, Patriotismus und Zugehörigkeit in sich. Es besteht daher ein Bedürfnis nach Identifikation. Dieses Konzept der Identifikation wird von den Sprachen oder Traditionen eines Ortes bestimmt, an dem wir geboren wurden, an dem wir aus bestimmten Gründen aufgewachsen sind, dem wir uns in besonderer Weise körperlich und/oder gefühlsmäßig verbunden fühlen.

Das Gefühl, dazuzugehören wird allerdings auch von einem Schutzverhalten begleitet, das sich in verschiedener Weise ausdrücken kann – und dies ist die andere Seite der Medaille: so entstehen etwa xenophobe – „xenos“ der Fremde, „phobos“, die Furcht – Tendenzen als Schutzmaßnahmen, um unsere Heimat zu bewahren. Es könnte zur Verachtung all dessen führen, das fremd ist und in unseren Lebensraum eindringen könnte. Dies ist der Fall bei Rassismus, wenn der gemeinsame Nenner die Farbe der Haut, der Augen oder der Haare ist, und daher Vorwürfe gegen Andersartigkeit und „Métissage“ erhoben werden. Unsere Sehnsucht, sich kleine Welten zu erschaffen, in denen wir uns „zu Hause“ fühlen, entspricht nicht nur unseren sozialen Bedürfnissen, sondern findet seinen Nachhall auch in Absonderung und Trennung.

Beziehung

Unsere Beziehung zur Welt kann mit einer Subjekt-Objekt-Beziehung verglichen werden, in der das Subjekt das Objekt fortwährend aufsaugt. Während wir Subjekt sind und uns als „Herren“ der Welt aufführen, legen wir weniger Wert darauf, andere Lebewesen, mit denen wir unser Umfeld teilen, zu respektieren. Dies lässt sich an den folgenden Beispielen verdeutlichen:

Wir errichten Staudämme, die uns mit Energie versorgen, die aber auch zur Verdrängung und Zerstörung der Natur führen; das Abholzen der Wälder zur Versorgung mit Holz ist immer noch verhängnisvoll für die natürlichen Lebensräume von Millionen anderer Lebewesen; das Ökosystem wird wegen unserer Energiebedürfnisse immer noch mit Ölkatastrophen gequält; die zahlreichen Tierversuche für unsere Kosmetik und Medizin. Und wie sollen wir erst mit unseren hochgerüsteten Massenvernichtungswaffen zurechtkommen?

Wenn diese Welt unser Zuhause ist, wie können wir dann in ihr umhergehen ohne die Narben zu bedenken, die wir hinterlassen? Wenn diese Welt unser Zuhause ist, wie können wir dann so nachlässig mit den anderen Bewohnern dieses Zuhauses umgehen?

Ausstellung

Die Gruppenausstellung lädt Künstler aus verschiedenen Nationen ein, Fragen zu stellen ohne den Zwang, auch Antworten zu liefern. Sie fordert die Künstler auf, sich mit Themen wie Zusammenhalt, Identifikation, Phobie, Natur – kurz unsere psycho-sozialen Bedingungen – zu beschäftigen. Ein passendes Zitat aus einem Gospellied lautet: “this world is not my home, I am just passing through” – diese Welt ist nicht mein Zuhause, ich reise nur durch.“

Alpen Butter wurde in Dezember 2007 in Berlin geboren. Das Projekt ist ein Versuch, verschiedene Mentalitäten und Lebensmöglichkeiten zu versöhnen. Dafür sorgen Albert Domènech, Dj und Sound-Ingenieur, und Andrea Burgueño, Querflötespielerin und Germanistin – digital und modern, analog und klassisch. Seit Dezember hat Alpen Butter in Berlin und Italien gespielt und beschäftigt sich gerade mit seiner ersten CD und zwei neuen Projekten, die in London und Florenz präsentiert werden.
